1. What is the Working Holiday Visa (WHV)?

Australia offers two main visa categories under the Working Holiday Maker program:

  • Subclass 417 (Working Holiday Visa) — for citizens of eligible countries such as UK, Canada, Korea, Germany, etc.

  • Subclass 462 (Work and Holiday Visa) — for citizens of a different list of countries, often with extra requirements like education or English proficiency.

Both visas allow you to stay up to 12 months, work to fund your travel, study up to 4 months, and enter/exit Australia multiple times during that period.

2. Eligibility Requirements (First Year)

To successfully apply for the first Working Holiday visa, you must meet the following:

Age

  • You generally must be between 18 and 30 at the time of application. For certain nationalities (UK, Canada, France, etc.), the upper limit is extended to 35

Nationality / Passport

  • You need to hold a valid passport from a country eligible under subclass 417 or subclass 462. Subclass 462 often requires additional educational or English requirements depending on your country.

Financial Means

  • You must show you have sufficient funds to support yourself initially (commonly AUD 5,000) plus funds for a return ticket (or proof of a return ticket).

  • You may be required to undergo health examinations or provide chest X-ray reports, depending on your background.

  • A police clearance / criminal record check may be required.

Key requirement: Specified Work (88 days / 3 months)

  • To be eligible, you must complete at least 88 days (about 3 months) of “specified work” in designated industries and in regional / northern / designated areas of Australia.

  • The “specified work” rule applies to both subclass 417 and subclass 462 (with some differences in regions/jobs).

Eligible Industries / Work Types

Typical types of work that count include:

  • Agriculture / farming / fruit picking / crop harvesting / animal cultivation

  • Fishing, pearling Tree farming / logging / forestry Mining / construction in regional areasIn disaster-affected regional areas: bushfire recovery, flood recovery work may count as specified work (if in declared zones).

Regional / Geographic Restrictions

Not all parts of Australia count. Your work must be done in eligible regional / northern / declared areas. Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth usually do not count.
You must check the eligible postcodes / regions list published by Home Affairs for your visa subclass.

Evidence Required for Specified Work

You must provide proof such as:

  • Payslips

  • Employment contracts or letters

  • Bank statements showing wages

  • Tax records or statements

  • Employer references

  • Other documentation that proves you genuinely performed the work in the correct region during the required period

How to Apply for the Second Year Visa

  1. Apply before your first visa expires
Either while in Australia or from outside (if permitted).

  2. Use ImmiAccount again, selecting the second year visa in the same subclass.

  3. Submit your specified work evidence
Make sure your documents clearly show date, industry, location, employer.

  4. Pay the visa fee (usually similar to first visa).

  5. Wait for decision

Some more tips on counting the 88 days: non-consecutive days count, full-time or part-time work can qualify if in correct industry & region.

5. (Optional) Third Year Visa

  • Under current rules, holders of the Second Working Holiday Visa can become eligible for a Third Working Holiday Visa if they complete six months of specified work during the second year.
